CQC REGISTRATION SUPPORT

CQC Registration for GP Practices and Private Clinics

Opening a GP practice or independent healthcare service in England involves more than completing a CQC application form. Your regulated activities, legal entity, Statement of Purpose, supporting documents, premises, clinical governance and leadership arrangements must all be accurate and consistent with the services you intend to provide.

I provide specialist CQC registration support for GP practices and independent healthcare providers, drawing on more than 12 years of experience working for CQC, including the inspection and regulation of primary care and independent healthcare services. This gives me first-hand insight into the registration process and the governance, safety and leadership arrangements CQC expects providers to have in place.

How I Support Your Practice Registration

01

Registration Scope

We discuss the legal entity, patient groups, services, locations and management structure, and which regulated activities apply. For GP and independent health services these are often Treatment of disease, disorder or injury and Diagnostic and screening procedures, and sometimes Family planning, Maternity and midwifery services, Surgical procedures or Transport services, triage and medical advice provided remotely. This helps establish what must be included in the application.

04

Practice Policies and Supporting Evidence

Depending on your package, I provide a practice-specific document checklist, review existing evidence or prepare service-specific policies. This may include infection prevention and control, safeguarding, consent, complaints, governance, incidents, recruitment and medical emergencies.

My support is tailored to the proposed service, rather than relying on a generic registration pack. I consider the consistency between your application, Statement of Purpose, policies, premises and proposed working arrangements.

02

Application Planning

I help you understand the provider, Registered Manager and Nominated Individual requirements that apply to your organisation. We identify the information and evidence required before drafting begins.

05

Fit-Person Interview Preparation

The proposed Registered Manager receives realistic interview preparation covering the regulations, governance, patient safety, infection control, medicines, complaints, incidents and oversight of the service.

03

Application and Statement of Purpose

I provide structured drafting support so the application and Statement of Purpose accurately describe your GP practice, online GP service or independent health service, including its regulated activities, locations and leadership arrangements.

06

Registration site visit and Readiness Review

For comprehensive packages, I review how the documents, premises, equipment and proposed systems work together. Any gaps are recorded in a clear, prioritised action plan.

What Does CQC Require From a New Provider?

What Does CQC Require From a New Provider?

CQC registration is about demonstrating that your service is ready to provide safe, effective and well-led care. A successful application needs to be consistent across your application form, Statement of Purpose, regulated activities and supporting evidence.

All new providers are required to submit a range of core documents, with additional evidence required depending on the type of service you intend to provide. For GP practices and independent healthcare providers, CQC may need to understand how your service will manage areas such as:

  • Clinical governance and quality assurance

  • Safeguarding adults and children

  • Medicines management and prescribing

  • Infection prevention and control

  • Recruitment and suitability of staff

  • Complaints and patient feedback

  • Consent and mental capacity

  • Staff training and competency

  • Patient safety and risk management

  • Premises, equipment and emergency arrangements

  • The suitability and experience of your leadership team

Your policies and supporting documents should be specific to your organisation and the services you intend to provide. They should also be consistent with each other and with the information contained within your CQC application.

GP practices, independent consulting doctors and some other service types may also need to provide additional supporting evidence depending on the nature of the service.

Getting these foundations right before submitting your application can reduce avoidable delays and help demonstrate to CQC that your service is properly prepared for registration.

CQC Registration FAQs for GP and Independent Health Services

Is CQC registration mandatory for GP practices?
Most England-based providers delivering regulated primary medical services must register with the CQC. Specific obligations are determined by the legal nature of the provider and the activities performed.

Do private GPs require CQC registration?
Typically, yes. Private clinics usually perform regulated activities like diagnostics and screening or treatment of disease, disorder and injury. The registration type needed depends on your service model and organisational structure.

Must independent clinics register with the CQC?
Not all healthcare businesses need registration. It depends on the specific activities, the clinical supervision level, and potential exemptions. Starting regulated activities without registration is a legal offence, so verify your status early.

How do I select the right regulated activities?
This varies by provider. Many GP and independent health services register for Treatment of disease, disorder or injury and Diagnostic and screening procedures. Depending on what you offer, you may also need Family planning, Maternity and midwifery services, or Surgical procedures. I can help you identify the activities that match the services you will actually provide.

What documentation is needed for the application?
Providers must submit a core set of evidence, including a Statement of Purpose and policies regarding safety, safeguarding, medicines, and governance. Requirements vary depending on your specific healthcare sector.

Is a Registered Manager required for every application?
Most providers carrying out regulated activities need a Registered Manager. While some exceptions exist, their application usually proceeds alongside the provider's. I can assist with both submissions and interview prep.

What occurs during a CQC Fit Person Interview?
The CQC evaluates whether candidates are suitable for their roles. Expect detailed questions regarding clinical governance, safety protocols, and risk management. My packages offer tailored mock interviews to prepare you.

Must I have a physical site before I apply?
Yes, the CQC expects your premises to be operationally ready upon application. Your facilities, staff, and safety systems are central to their assessment. Do not apply prematurely if your site is not yet equipped.

What are the typical registration timelines?
There is no fixed schedule. The duration is influenced by application quality, service complexity, and CQC workloads. A thorough, error-free application minimises delays, though no one can guarantee a specific speed.

Do you guarantee that my application will be successful?
No. The final decision rests entirely with the CQC. My role is to significantly improve your chances by identifying compliance gaps and ensuring your documentation meets the highest professional standards.

Can you assist if my application is already submitted?
Absolutely. I can step in to review a current application, address inconsistencies, and help prepare the remaining documentation or interview requirements to get you across the finish line.

Do you support registration for digital or online GP services?
Yes. Online GP services often need to consider the regulated activity Transport services, triage and medical advice provided remotely, as well as Treatment of disease, disorder or injury. CQC will also want to understand how you verify patient identity, prescribe safely, share information with a patient's NHS GP and keep clinical records. I can help you set this out clearly in your application and policies.
